Huawei P50 Pro Review

The summer of 2021 was a very important time for Huawei. The Chinese giant announced the launch of the Huawei P50 Pro, its new top-of-the-range phone that recently arrived in our beautiful country.

This new smartphone represents the best Huawei has managed to do at the moment in terms of performance and aesthetic choices, which is why it's time to put it under the microscope in a review to see what this phone is actually capable of.

Is the Huawei P50 Pro worth buying?

A winning team doesn't change (at least not too much)

The Huawei P50 Pro is a smartphone that, from a design point of view, takes up the classic lines of the most modern smartphones, adding details here and there that make you realise the level of quality. The groove that follows this smartphone is the same as that traced by its predecessors and, therefore, it is illegitimate to think of a revolution in this sense.

The back of the phone, in particular, is the thing that has changed most. Compared to the top-of-the-range competition, where the back of the smartphone usually contains a very important camera block, even in terms of size, here we have less pronounced lenses and bulges. The photo block, consisting of a system called Huawei Dual Matrix, is immediately recognisable by two rounded portholes separated from each other that are very attractive to the eye.

Also very interesting are the colours available to the public, called Cocoa Gold and Golden Black respectively. These colours are applied to a lithium glass body with aluminium treated with a special process called NCVM sputtering together with a non-conductive galvanic film; the end result is a smartphone with brighter colours. In full tradition with previous Huawei top of the range devices, there is also the IP68 certification that protects the device from water and dust, all for less than 200 grams of weight.

Brute force at the service of the user

Display

The Huawei P50 Pro features a 6.6-inch OLED panel with curved sides, with a central hole dedicated to the front camera. The screen resolution is 1228*2700, lower than the QHD+ of other top of the range devices but higher than the popular FullHD+ resolution for a pixel density of around 450ppi; in this way Huawei wanted to strike a balance between high screen quality and high power consumption.

Camera

Very interesting is the photo compartment based on the aforementioned Dual Matrix Camera. The rear photos are taken thanks to the collaboration of two photo blocks: in the first there are three sensors, of 50, 13 and 40 MP respectively, while in the second there is a 64MP sensor and a dual LED flash. Between the two modules there is also an interesting multi-spectrum sensor to improve the colour rendition of the smartphone.

Computing power

Also of interest is the computing power of the P50 Pro, this time coming from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 in 4G version accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory (expandable via proprietary NM format memory cards).

The performance of these components is exemplary, giving the device scores very similar to other top-of-the-range devices in virtually any situation.

Conclusion

All this runs on the EMUI 12 operating system which, despite the absence of Google services, remains a very interesting and responsive environment, especially when supported by top quality hardware. In conclusion, the smartphone made by Huawei proved to be a great top-of-the-range model with a fascinating design, a great photo compartment and a brute force that is hard to ignore. The p50 pro price is also very reasonable. Just a pity about the absence of 5G, which will arrive on the brand's models sooner or later.
